Room for Storms
2020

Room for Storms is a video projection event in which satellite footage of the 2008 hurricane season, donated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is paired with a soundtrack by La Rubia Te Besa. For the first time, this installment will pair the satellite footage with the sounds of the ocean. Room for Storms is motivated by the attempt to imagine scale relationships between artistic endeavor and the weather.

About the Artist

Birgit Rathsmann is an artist and animator. Previous locations presenting Room for Storms were a shop front cinema in New York’s Chinatown, on the East River Park Bandshell in New York City, on the facade of the Avalon Hotel in Miami (pictured), and in Mexico City, accompanied by a live heavy metal band. Each of these versions had new soundtracks commissioned specifically for each screening.

Rathsmann created “Malpaso”, an exhibition with Alejandro Almaza Pereda and Rick Karr, which investigates a submerged church in Chiapas, Mexico and was presented at The Clemente on New York’s Lower East Side in the spring of 2019. The artist created and directed animations in collaboration with a number of comedians including Lorelei Ramirez, Mary Houlihan, Tim Platt and Ikechukwu Ufomado and directed a documentary film about women martial arts heroes and directors in films from Hong Kong. Birgit Rathsmann grew up in Germany and Indonesia.
